Our founder, Sheila Turyahabwe, first realized the impact of digital skills while studying for her Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. Despite being a first-year student with no formal qualifications, Sheila’s passion for computers landed her a teaching job at a local nursery school.
There, she witnessed firsthand how excited and eager young children were to learn about technology. However, she also saw the challenges they faced when exposed to the digital world without proper guidance.
As Sheila’s career progressed, she traveled to various communities, noticing how the lack of access to digital tools and skills was holding back not only schools but entire families and communities.
Many people in the informal sector missed opportunities to improve their livelihoods simply because they lacked basic knowledge of how to use technology responsibly and effectively.
This gap in access to technology and digital literacy weighed heavily on her, and she knew something had to change.
Shine for Change was born out of that vision—a commitment to bridge the digital divide by equipping communities with the skills they need to thrive in the modern world.
Today, we focus on providing access to digital tools, building the capacity of teachers and learners, and offering training in essential digital skills.
Through our programs, we help students, parents, and local businesses leverage technology for education, economic empowerment, and informed decision-making.
